Compass, Map - and Luck: First World War aviator escape stories and their collection by the Imperial War Museum. IWM was formed in March 1917 and sought to provide a record of every type of activity that took place in the First World War. Escaping from prisoner of war camps was a subject avidly collected by the Museum, and the Great War escapers would form role models for MI9, the branch of Military Intelligence tasked with Escape and Evasion in December 1939.
